Greater Antilles, ca. AD 1000–1500

Fragment from the upper wall and rim of a hand-built pottery vessel of coarse brown-orange ware. A modelled zoomorphic or anthropomorphic head rises from the rim. It has a crest of applied knobs and ridges, punched and pierced eyes, and a projecting snout or face. The curving wall below is decorated on the outside with deep parallel channels and short incised dashes, which spread out from the base of the head. The inner surface is smoothed, and both faces are darkened by fire clouding or soot. Originally an ornamental rim projection (adorno) or handle on a bowl. Such pieces often represent spirit beings (zemís), animals or bats. Old breaks along the lower and side edges, with chips to the applied ornament and earthen deposits. Mounted on a custom metal stand.

Size: 6 inches (15.2 cm) W. x 5 inches (12.7 cm) H. x 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) D. + custom stand.

Provenance: From the estate of Jacques (1921-2023) and Frances Crampon (1922-2025). Captain Crampon was born in Belgium, joined the Merchant Marine, and eventually became a Captain in the US Navy, on search and rescue ships. He and his wife, Frances, a singer and actress, met when she was on a USO tour to Japan. Together they traveled the world, living for several years in Tokyo and Capetown. They were avid collectors of Asian, pre-Columbian and ancient and fine art. They also had an extensive collection of maps. Jacques and Frances settled down in the heart of Manhattan's Greenwich Village, where they remained until their deaths, after very full and interesting lives
