Classic Veracruz (Remojadas tradition), Gulf Coast of Mexico, ca. 600–800 AD

A choice hollow pottery whistle-and-rattle figure modeled as a standing female, her legs set wide apart and arms extended out at her sides in an open, ceremonial gesture. She wears a full, wide flaring skirt and a broad draping blouse, her face animated by deeply incised eyes and an open mouth, crowned by an elaborate headdress. The figure is finished in a cream slip overall, with lustrous black bitumen (chapopote) accenting the eyes, mouth, and parts of the headdress, and further enlivened with bold red painted details and geometric decoration across the skirt.

The piece is dually functional as a musical instrument — fitted with a rattle in the head and a whistle at the rear — a hallmark of Classic Veracruz "El Faisán" and Remojadas figural ceramics. Such sound-producing figures were used in rituals, processions, and ceremonies, their voices believed to summon spirits and deities and to accompany celebrations along the Gulf Coast.

The figure retains strong original surface, with cream slip, red pigment, and black bitumen well preserved, and the expected minor wear, chips, and earthen deposits consistent with age and burial.

Size 9-3/4 inches (24.7cm) H.
