Arizona, ca. 1900–1920, hand-coiled on a three-rod willow foundation and stitched in willow and devil's claw (Martynia) to form a large, shallow, gently flaring tray built around a bold radiating eight-point star that expands outward from a small black center medallion. Between the arms of the star the weaver has filled the ground with slender pointed leaf-forms enclosing rows of small anthropomorphic figures, and the wide outer band carries an animated procession of standing human figures alternating with quadrupeds — likely dogs or horses — the whole framed by a fine sawtooth rim band; pictorial imagery of this kind, combining star geometry with human and animal figures, is the most sought-after category of Western Apache basketry and is closely associated with San Carlos and Fort Apache weavers working for the growing tourist and collector market of the early twentieth century. Measuring [Diam: 17-1/2 in / 44.4 cm x H: 4 in / 10.2 cm], the tray presents in honest, well-preserved condition with strong contrast between the golden willow ground and the deep chocolate devil's claw, light overall patina, minor fiber softening, a few scattered small stitch losses along the rim, and no significant restoration evident from either face. Directly comparable Western Apache pictorial trays with radiating star centers and figural border bands are held at the Heard Museum, Phoenix (see the Basha Family Collection Western Apache polychrome basket, c. 1920), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Western Apache storage basket, acc. 2011.154.85), and the Eddie Basha Collection, which includes a closely related sixteen-inch Apache tray of ca. 1900 with an eight-point star culminating in a rim band of dog figures; the type is further discussed in Mark Sublette's published surveys of Western Apache figurative trays.
